Vantage Point

Just another movie I have been wanting to see that Sarah & I finally caught thanks to DVR.

Plot: The President of the United States is assassinated during an important political rally in Europe. There are several suspicious parties and each one has a different story to tell.

Twist: Not everything is what it seems, when the President is tuns out to still be alive.

Memorable Quotes: He doesn’t even look like me.

My Thoughts: This movie wasn’t really what I expected it to be. Unfortunately, it wasn’t really better than I expected it to be either. While I liked the premise, I wasn’t astounded by the plot because there were no major surprises. All in all it was entertaining, but nothing special.

Who Will Like This Movie: People who enjoy a different approach to movie making.

I guess I’m a sucker for a good trailer because this one was so good I felt like I needed to see it opening weekend. Luckily, some friends already told me that I would really like it.

Plot: The daughter of a retired government agent is kidnapped while she is on vacation in Paris. He must use his skills to get her back as quickly as possible.

Twist: The investigation leads the man into the dark world of human trafficking.

Memorable Quotes: They’re going to take you.

My Thoughts: This movie is a no frills, non-stop thriller. It doesn’t take very long to develop the back story and get things rolling and the movie just gets better from there. The action isn’t all guns and explosions, but there are plenty of car chases and fight scenes to move things along. It’s only about 90 minutes long so there isn’t much time for anything but action. Sarah really liked it too so it’s a good one for the ladies.

Who Will Like This Movie: If you like right to the point movies without all the fluff then this one is for you.

I Am Legend

Tonsils removed plus 3 days. Pain medication level: moderate.

Plot: After a disease spreads throughout the world, one man fights to stay alive and find a cure at ground zero.

Twist: The man must watch his every move since the city is full of blood thirsty hives of infected humans.

Memorable Quotes: God didn’t do this…we did!

My Thoughts: Despite big theatrics and fancy special effects I thought this movie wasn’t much more that a zombie movie in disguise. It reminded me a lot of 28 Days Later, except there were even fewer survivors in this plot. I did find the presentation of a deserted Manahattan to be visually stunning and thought provoking. Other than that it left a lot to be desired.

Who Will Like This Movie: People who thought Wild Wild West was good becuase of Will Smith.

The Dark Knight

July 18, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I don’t think that there is really any need for an explanation necessary on this one.

Plot: Batman joins forces with the new Gotham district attorney, Harvey Dent, in an effort to overcome the numerous crime mobs in the city.

Twist: A new nemesis, The Joker, presents himself as a ruthless criminal with a mind only for destruction.

Memorable Quotes: Because some men aren’t looking for anything logical, like money. They can’t be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

My Thoughts: In agreement with all the critics, this movie was excellent. The acting was top notch on all parts. I hate to jump the band wagon, but Ledger’s performance steals the show with his very convincing depiction of The Joker. The stunts were fantastic and the story was even better. The only minor drawback was that it seemed to be a touch too long for my tastes…especially with all the numerous buildups that take place throughout the movie. Nonetheless, it was still great overall.

Who Will Like This Movie: Anyone who loves hero movies, big action flicks, or a summer blockbuster.

Wanted

I thought this looked a little sketchy in the trailers, but I heard from a few different people that this movie was pretty good. And Angelina Jolie is in it…so why not ?

Plot: A normal office worker who is bored with his mundane lifestyle learns that he is the son of a famous assassin.

Twist: He joins the league of assassins and learns that he will soon except the job of killing his father’s assassin.

Memorable Quotes: Kill one, maybe save a thousand.

My Thoughts: This movie was pretty average overall. The action scenes and stunts were very well done, albeit a little overly unrealistic at times. They story was solid, but it seemed like they could have done more with it. James McAvoy make for a fairly strange hero, but I guess that is part of the draw it has. Jolie looks good as usual and didn’t even have to cover the tattoos.

Who Will Like This Movie: People who like big stunts and anyone who is a sucker for snipers and assassins.

Iron Man

I decided I wanted to see this the minute I heard that Robert Downy Jr. was going to play a superhero. And after hearing several good reviews from friends it was an easy pick.

Plot: A famous arms designer and dealer, Tony Stark, has a change of heart after being kidnapped by an independent terrorist group. His creation used for his escape becomes his greatest weapon yet.

Twist: Friends soon become enemies as Stark wrestles with his new found ambitions.

Memorable Quotes:
Christine: After all these years, Tony still has you picking up the dry cleaning?
Pepper: I do anything and everything Mr. Stark requires…including occasionally taking out the trash. Will that be all?

My Thoughts: As superhero movies go I thought this one was very good. I really like the casting of Robert Downy Jr. in the lead role since he does a great job as an unlikely hero type. As one might expect the science leaves a lot of holes for explanation, but the effects were entertaining without being over the top. Of course the final scene with Samuel L. Jackson to setup future Avengers movies is exciting, but also makes me nervous about a future let down.

Who Will Like This Movie: Anyone who enjoys the unlikely hero or has stacks and stacks of Marvel comics in a closet somewhere.

Hitman

I never really played this game before, but I was still fascinated by the previews. What guy doesn’t love a good assassin movie?

Plot: An assassin, who is being closely followed by men from Interpol, is hired to do a job on the President of Russia.

Twist: When the target turns out to alive he must scramble to find the truth.

Memorable Quotes: Stop talking or I’ll put you back in the trunk.

My Thoughts: As far as assassin movies go this wasn’t one of my favorites. The main character seemed overly robotic at times and the twist at the end left me pondering too many “what ifs”. As for the action itself I thought it was pretty good and seemed to be relatively believable. The guy definitely came off looking like a badass instead a freaking super-hero, which is ideal for an assassin. I almost gave the movie an extra point because Olga Kurylenko is smokin’ hot, but since her role is fairly small and seemingly useless I can’t really justify that sort of bonus. Tough break Hitman.

Who Will Like This Movie: Big time gamers or people with a sniper obsession.

Jumper

What do you do in Bozeman, Montana on a Monday afternoon after you’ve been snowboarding for three straight days? You go see a movie of course. Unfortunately, the theater options were very limited.

Plot: The story is about a boy named David Rice (Hayden Christensen), who discovers that he has the ability to teleport to anyplace that he has seen before.

Twist: David is not the only person in the world who can teleport. He quickly finds out that he is one of several “Jumpers” and is thrown into a war with people who have sworn to kill them.

Memorable Quotes: I like walking for a change. It makes me feel normal.

My Thoughts: This movie seemed like it spent the majority of the time setting up for a sequel (or more likely a trilogy). However, Rachel Bilson is extremely hot and I still like to daydream about what you could do if you could teleport yourself to anywhere. The combination of these last two things brought my rating up a full point, but it still isn’t worth going to the theater.

Who Will Like This Movie: People who frequently daydream about winning the lottery or anyone who hasn’t gotten over their Rachel Bilson jones from The O.C.

3:10 to Yuma

January 21, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I’ve been wanting to see this movie since it was released, but I never got around to it. Since I still hadn’t really heard a bad review from anybody it was time to grab a few adult beverages, slide into some comfortable lounge wear, and get into a little western tale.

Plot: A rancher named Dan Evans (Christian Bale) witnesses the holdup of a coach on its way to Bisbee. The leader of the group responsible for the holdup, Ben Wade (Russell Crowe), is captured while visiting a lady in the town of Bisbee. The men must transport Wade to Contention in order to get him on the 3:10 train to Yuma prison. Evans offers his services in exchange for $200, which he intends to use to pay off the debts on his land that is about to be taken from him.

Twist: The road to Contention is long and dangerous because the group is being followed by Wade’s gang. As the story unravels Wade continuously tries to convince Evans to turn back, but when Evans son arrives to help he is determined to do the right thing.

Memorable Quote: “They had a lot of weapons mister and they were shooting bullets.”

My Thoughts: The movie was a good mixture of story and action, which kept me entertained throughout the movie. Christian Bale and Russell Crowe both played their parts very well, but I thought Crowe’s character was very entertaining due to a nice mixture of wit and sadism. Think Rusty Ryan from Ocean’s Eleven meets Derek Vinyard from American History X. In the end, it’s a good story with a nice twist at the end.

Who Will Like This Movie: Anybody who loves Tombstone or likes to cheer for the bad guy sometimes.

Underworld: Evolution

January 17, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I decided to watch this movie because the first movie was pretty decent and Kate Beckinsale is really hot. If nothing else I figured it would be a good movie to watch with surround sound and the bass shakers on.

Plot: Take everything you thought you knew from the first movie and throw it out the window. The writers had to get creative in order for this movie to have any basis. You find out immediately that Viktor wasn’t the original vampire, but instead it was Marcus, the son of Alexander Corvinus, who was bitten by a bat to make the first vampire. You also learn that Alexander’s other son, William, was bitten by a wolf to make the first lycan. Selene, Kate Beckinsale, must team up with Scott Stapp of Creed, aka Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman), to stop Marcus from releasing his brother from his king tut’s tomb-like prison.

Twist: The whole movie is a twist from the first one so no real need to go into great explanation here.

Memorable Quote: Tanis: You don’t scare me, Selene.

Selene: We’ll have to work on that.

My Thoughts (Spoilers): As I expected this was a great movie as far as surround sound and bass shakers are concerned. Other than that is was pretty boring. However, I’m going to give it one extra point because Kate looks great in the sex scene even though she reveals nothing.

Who Will Like This Movie: People that really like to see blood spilled or love all vampire movies.
