National Treasure: Book of Secrets

August 18, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Day four and movie number three. Pain medication level: high. Switched to Percocet in hopes of taming a raging flame in my throat.

Plot: This time the Gates boys find themselves trying to prove that ancestor was not involved in the plot to kill president Lincoln.

Twist: The group soon discovers that proving the existance of an ancient City of Gold is the only way to exonerate their relative.

Memorable Quotes: The last time I checked, we make out living off of crazy.

My Thoughts: As expected this sequel was not nearly as good as the original. The plot felt too forced the whole time and the surprises are few and far between from the first movie. The two good parts are Justin Bartha’s humor and Diane Kruger’s hotness.

Who Will Like This Movie: People who love mystery movies no matter how cheesy they are.

To Catch a Thief

May 15, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Another classic that is one of my friend’s favorites. Two down…but four left to go.

Plot: John Robie, a master thief living in the French Riviera, comes back into question by the police when jewelry starts getting stolen at luxury resorts. The man must find the true thief in order to prove his innocence.

Twist: Robie gets involved with a beautiful woman in an effort to get closer to capturing the thief, but the woman is much more clever than he assumes.

Memorable Quotes: Why buy an old car if you can get a new one cheaper? It will run better and last longer.

My Thoughts: Although I found it a bit predictable, I really enjoyed this movie. The story and characters are excellent and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a remake someday. Cary Grant plays his usual, smooth part and Grace Kelly is quite the looker in the role of the young, pampered heiress.

Who Will Like This Movie: If you like old movies with smooth, shifty protaganists…then this is right up your alley.

Population 436

February 29, 2008 · Leave a Comment

The other night I was flipping through the channels trying to decide what to watch. I came across this movie on the guide and by looking at the info box I saw that Fred Durst was in this movie. This I had to see.

Plot: The movie is a strange tale about an employee from the U.S. Census Bureau going to the town of Rockwell Falls to determine why the population has consistently been 436 for several decades.

Twist: After some research and talking to the townspeople the man begins to discover that there is a lot more to the consistent population than just coincidence.

Memorable Quotes: He’s got the fever.

My Thoughts: I have to admit that this movie wasn’t quite as bad as I expected it would be, but that doesn’t really say too much. There were certainly stretches of bad acting, but ol’ Fred Durst wasn’t nearly as bad as I was expecting him to be. Actually, he wasn’t too bad until he had to act out some emotions. All in all it felt like a cheesy attempt at a twist on M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village.

Who Will Like This Movie: Anyone who likes to make fun of bad suspense movies.

Brick

So this is movie number two borrowed from my friend’s collection. It’s kind of crazy that it has taken me this long to review this movie. Especially, since I was sick for three days. Nevertheless, here goes nothing.

Plot: The story is a mystery of sorts about a street-wise boy named Brendan, who is looking for the murderer of his ex-girlfriend, Emily. Brendan must figure out who is friend and who is foe while following the trail to the killer.

Twist: After their breakup Emily had gotten involved in the wonderful world of drugs, so Brendan must involve himself with the group to figure out who was involved.

Memorable Quotes: Laura: Do you trust me now?
Brendan: Less than when I didn’t trust you before.

My Thoughts: As I was foretold by friend this movie was pretty tough to follow. Especially the language, which caused me to resort to turning on the subtitles on more than one occasion. It wasn’t Momento tough, but still an intricate plot. Tug’s character seemed to be perfectly developed because I found myself wanting to kick his ass the whole movie. When I thought about it later, this felt like it was probably the desired reaction. Actually I thought almost all the characters played well with the exception of The Pin, who I didn’t really understand how he could become a drug lord of sorts. Maybe that’s due to my lack of involvement in drugs. As for the plot and the finish I was constantly searching for what would happen next and that’s enough to satisfy me.

Who Will Like This Movie: Anybody who likes fast dialog or speaks high school drug user gibberish.

The Thin Man

January 19, 2008 · Leave a Comment

After a friend told me how much they loved to watch old black and white movies I thought I might give an oldie a try. I remembered seeing The Thin Man on a list of somebody’s favorite movies and it has gotten pretty stellar reviews over the years so I figured why not. After all movies don’t get too much older than 1934 without being silent.

Plot: The story begins when Clyde Wynant is informed that his daughter will be married just before the New Year and he wants to prepare her wedding gift, $50,000 in government bonds, before he leaves town. However, he finds that the bonds are missing and knows that Ms. Wolfe, his secretary, has taken them. When he tries to retrieve them he realizes that she had an accomplice so he goes after the accomplice before he leaves town. When Ms. Wolfe is found dead shortly afterwards the murder mystery begins.

Twist: A former detective and now very wealthy man named Nick Charles is vacationing in the city at the same time as the murders. Everybody, including his wife Nora, wants him to take the case and help the police catch the killer. Nick has no desire to be involved and is more concerned with drinking and having a good time on his vacation.

Memorable Line: Nick Charles) What’ll you have to drink?

Herbert MacCaulay) I’m not drinking.

Nick Charles) That’s a mistake.

My Thoughts: The playful and quick witted exchanges between Nick and Nora Charles make up many of the best scenes in the movie. I was also shocked at times because I never thought people in the 1930’s fooled around on their significant others as much as this movie would have you believe. The story moves pretty quickly and there are a lot of characters to keep up with. Some of the acting resembles that of a high school play, but what can you expect from that time period. Overall, I would say it was very good.

Who Would Like This Movie: My mom and anybody who likes to watch old black and white noir films.

Rating: 9 out of 10 (as far as old movies go)
